Is Queer as Folk's Gale Harold Gay, Bisexual or Straight?

Gale Harold is most well known for his role as Brian Kinney on Queer as Folk, the show that had a huge impact on the LGBT community and it continues to be seen all around the world by gay people. The future generation of gay people will probably see the show too. It's one of those classics that will never die.

Anyway, the answer to the question "Is Gale Harold gay?" has been answered thousands (if not, millions) of times on the internet. People have been speculating his sexuality since the first episode of Queer as Folk premiered on Showtime. During the filming of the show, Gale declined to talk much about his sex life and sexuality because he respected his character Brian Kinney and the show. He wanted to separate his real life from his character so he didn't proclaim his heterosexuality until after the show ended.

Here are some quotes from Gale himself.

"I'm straight, but the character was too important to me to muddle his world with my private life. As a nobody, I got away with that deflection. I think it may have helped to introduce Brian as a believable gay man. Maybe not. However it played, it's been out of my hands for a long time." - Gale Harold. (April 2013)

"For a while, the gay thing seemed like such a big deal. But now, I don't think it is. It's just a comedy-drama about people who live in the United States. It's a slice-of-life. I play a character-that's it. But I was well aware of the gay lifestyle before the show. I've been hit on in a really strong way by gay men who've tried to convert me, and a lot of my heroes are gay. William Burroughs, Lou Reed. Well, I guess Lou Reed is bi. The point is, it's 2002, gay life is no longer that shocking." - Gale Harold. (2002)

There you have it! Gale is straight and I have no reason to NOT believe him. He played a very convincing gay character on cable TV that has changed the lives of many gay teens growing up in the United States (maybe even worldwide.)

By the way, if you haven't seen Queer as Folk, you really have to go out and buy the complete DVD sets! It's worth the time to watch all 5 seasons!

Im not lesbian or anything but that show was an eye opener for people like me too...

    1. I absolutely agree. I am not lesbian but I have so much respect on gays and lesbians because their feelings are real and as friends, as long as you dont betray them, they will slways be around to fight for you

  2. Beer Gin,

I agree. I'm a straight woman and I loved it. I watched it every week when it was on television. I hope more people watch it. It has awesome storylines.

  3. Agreed... I'm straight as well and I absolutely loved this show.... still do. I think if more heteros watched it, they'd realize that we're all just 'people' and whoever we choose to love and love is our business and no one else's... and so everyone's rights should be the same. There's nothing wrong with them and their lives are just as real... but their problems, because of bigots, are bigger than ours. To quote Daphne "I'm not a lesbian, but I'm a big fan". :)

  5. Gale being the most brilliant actor, apart from the fact that he the most perfect creation of GOD till date, leaves me wondering as to how and why his body of work is so little....Maybe he has got a laidback asshole for an agent....
I wish more and more straight people like me, see his talent and make demands...so that somewhere someone gets up and notice this yet untapped greatness and treat the world with a movie or show...showcasing this beauty.

  6. Doesn't Matter at alllll... as to what his sexual orientation is....that's his choice to do what he wants...but the fact is tht the man is 'super-duper-talented', and handsome...and must be more mainstream and must get out of Indifilms etc often. I agree...his agent must be an idiot. and Gale, I hear is definitely an easy going person who would not be aggressive to market himself.
I wish a few of us could start gathering money from his worldwide fans, and make a movie with Gale. Aaaah.

  7. I am a 23 year old straight female who has just found out about QaF in the last few months. I have loved this show very much. As a young adult in 2013 I find this show both inspiring and incredible for it's time. I have grown up all my life with friends and family who are a part of the LGBT community. I have personally watched them struggle and fight with being accepted in society. In short I really have a high appreciation for this show I hope if anything now even years after it's stopped filming that more young people like myself will see this show and remember we are all human beings and we are all the same. Gay, straight or otherwise.

  8. I am from India, and straight female....in 40s...
saw this serial 8 months back and got addicted
know only 4-5 people in my life (in India) who r gay-lesbos...wonderful human beings...but extremely difficult life because of being in India specifically...
one of my cousin. A beautiful gorgeous female went through a sex change operation in USA and is now known as Paul....
this serial made me realize sooo many things such as acceptance, empathy, non-judgmental love.....and I truly appreciate today, a human who is capable of loving...no matter how difficult it is....end of the day....the basic thing is to love and be loved.....

I grew up watching QAF. Now i'm in my late 20's!

  10. QAF will always remain near and dear to my heart because of its message of equality and love.

And Gale is just such a gifted actor. It's seriously a shame we do not see more of him on television these days. :(

  15. Just to clarify. Not that anyone's sexuality is of anyone's business. However, the only real-life gay (regular) actors on the show were in fact Peter Paige, Robert Gant and Randy Harrison. Otherwise the remainder of the cast are straight actors who were very enveloped in their character. Thankfully they are fantastic actors who understand there is no such thing as being a homophobic asshole actor. You are not your character and they are incredible people for that. I actually had a friend tell me, because she refused to watch, that the men, including Gale and Hal, must be a little gay because there is no way a straight man would do such a thing as that. How terrible and sad for someone to believe that all men are "homophobic" and will not go against that.

To end, my favourite two quotes in the world is from Debbie Novotny (Sharon) who said, all love is equal. genitalia is just gods way of accessorizing.

and finally, Morgan Freeman who said, I hate the word Homophobia. It's not a Phobia. You are not scared. You are an asshole.
    very well said I think.

For anyone who continued to read my long letter, Thank you. and spread the love. not hate. bullying and fear of being your own true self must stop. If we're lucky our great-grandchildren will never have to know what it means to accept acceptance. It should just be a natural part of life to welcome everyone and love everyone no matter the gender. Lets put a stop to Gay Marriage, and let it just be MARRIAGE. No definition.

    LOVE = LOVE

  16. While I am addicted to binge watching this show on Netflix, I have to say that the writing is awful, the acting gets progressively better and the woman who plays Lindsey is probably the worst actress in history. The reason I watch it is to gain a greater understanding and perhaps even sensitivity. The writing is so low brow and everything is a joke, a pun or innuendo that you can see coming a mile away…almost as bad as SITC. The writers struck gold by being involved in this long running show…but it panders to the audience in a way that they really should be ashamed of themselves.I would NOT recommend spending money on buying the complete DVD Box Set…just binge watch it on Netflix for $7.99/mo and you be the judge. OOH! I can't believe I forgot to mention this part….you will see a lot of frontal male nudity…however NEVER nice large packages…only slender, lean, short members get the screen time on this show. Who made that rule? Booooo!!!! ;)

    2. You are foolish to trash the writing of QAF. Everything a joke?--like the way homophobia is denounced again and again? You have a weird idea of a joke. Gale Harold's performance is spectacular, the best portrayal of a gay man I have ever seen. He can make love with just the expression on his face, and notice, he delivers lines a lot like Lauren Bacall. The DVDs are indeed worth every penny. I watch it all the time, and each time I do I see new examples of the brilliance of the entire project. If only there were a QAF2!

    3. The show and writing were BRILLIANT. you sound like a very depressed and jaded person. stop suffering and judging so negatively. when you can write scripts and story lines better then you can say it sux

    5. I guess you have never been to a gay night club. I used to go with my friends to Fly in Toronto ( which is actually Babillon in QAF) and it was exactly the same vibe as in the show. Beautiful, mostly lean, buff, halfnaked men. Gay men really know how to take care of themselves. I'm a straight woman and these were some of the best times I shared with my straight and gay friends, going to these clubs in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

    1. Why? Because he's talented enough to be convincing in the role he plays? He played an extremely convincing neo-nazi in Grey's Anatomy but that doesn't make him a white supremacist. It's called acting. He's good at it.

    2. And YOU are as homophobic an asshole as they come!!!

    3. Gale is gay. Why is it homophobic to say that? Nobody is saying that being gay is a bad thing. You have no idea what the word means and you have no business using it.

  18. I also loved the show. I am a straight woman who absolutely fell in love with the show. I loved Brian and Justins relationship and couldn't wait to see each and every episode. I have watched the series over and over again. I don't think I will ever get enough. Brian Kinney is just the sexiest man alive. Too bad they couldn't do a new season or even a reunion show.

  19. Loved this show! Watched it recently and loved the story line and the acting by diffrent and vibrant characters. And of course, i love Brian and Justin. I just wish it had a happy ending - it is cheesy but it would have been so satisfying to have known that they were happily together, though this is a show.

  22. I found this show about three months ago and can't stop binge watching it. I love every character, but Brian is my favorite. Also adore Michael, Justin and Emmet. Sharon Gless does a fantastic job as Debbie. By the way, I'm straight.

  23. I started watching QUEER AS FOLK last week and I just finished Season 1. Can't wait to start watching SEASON 2. There's a part of me that wants to watch it slowly so I can have something to look forward to. But I just HAVE to watch the next episode as soon as I am done with the current episode.

  24. I feel that Gale is actually bi-sexual, but it's his choice to say he is completely straight if he wants to. If you watch any of the original UK version of the show, where the main actors are indeed straight, you can see that the kisses between the actors are more forced and uncomfortable looking. Even the other "straight" actors on the US version didn't look as natural as Gale did with Randy. The kind of chemistry G & R had would be very difficult to duplicate, even for a straight couple. Sorry, but the man is not completely straight. I think he as identified as straight publicly for the sake of his career.

  25. his career would not suffer at all if he was bi-. It didn't suffer because he played a gay man!

  30. I really don't care, but you saying that actors can't act or fake that kind of passion or chemistry is just not true. It's called acting for a reason, otherwise no one would watch any shows or movies.
